Why We Don’t Sell Every Foal

Some foals stay by design. Some stay because we can’t let go.

Not every foal born at American Dream Horse is for sale.

Some are, and we're honest about which ones. But every year, there are foals we keep. Sometimes before they're on the ground, sometimes not until we've watched them for six months and realized we can't hand them to anyone else.

There are three reasons a foal stays.

Because the program needs them

Every breeding program has to replace itself. Mares age, stallions retire, bloodlines thin. If we don't hold back the daughters and sons who will one day take those places, there is no program in ten years. Only what we sold.

When a foal is born who could stand in for their dam or their sire, we hold them. Not to hoard them. To keep the work going.

Because the cross is too rare to replace

Some crosses can be bought. Others can't. Some of our horses carry bloodlines so old that even we found the cross elsewhere, it would be generations younger. Certain things can only be preserved, never recreated.

When we breed a mare to a stallion and the result is something we could not walk out and purchase on any farm in the country. A combination of pedigree, type, gait, and temperament that would take us years and a great deal of time to create again. We keep that foal. Even when we could sell them tomorrow. Especially then.

You do not sell what you cannot replace. Not if you're serious about the breed.

Because we love them

And sometimes there is no strategic reason at all.

Sometimes a foal is born and something in them makes it clear they belong here. The way they meet your eye, the way they follow, the way they settle when you put a hand on them. We have kept foals we intended to sell. We have taken foals off the sale list after buyers were already asking. We are not ashamed of that.

A breeding program that never keeps a foal for love is not a farm. It is a factory.

We understand this is not how everyone does it. Some breeders sell every foal, and some of them do it well. But at ADH, our herd is our family that grows slowly, on purpose, with the horses we can't imagine parting with alongside the ones we've promised to good homes.
